The PhiladeIphia Chromosome in Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Abstract
Chronic myelogenous leukemia is one of a group of hematologic disorders that is
characterized by a proliferative abnormality in the stem cell. It is associated with the
specific cytogenetic abnormality referred to as the Philadelphia chromosome, marked by
leukocytosis and a greatly enlarged spleen.
This is to report the result of the cytogenetic observation of 10 patients with chronic
myelogenous leukemia who had been admitted to the department of internal medicine at
Han Yang University Hospital during the period from January, 1980 to March, 1982.
The chromosome preparations were made from bone marrow aspirates by a
modification of the method of Moorhead, Arakaki and Sparkes.
The results are as follows;
1. Chromosomal studies performed in 10 cases revealed 9 Philadelphia chromosome
positive cases and 1 negative case
2. The Philadelphia chromosome negative case had a bleeding tendency and
thrombocytopenia, whereas the Philadelphia chromosome positive cases showed
thrombocytosis.
3. The clinical symptoms and prognosis of Philadelphia chromosome positive cases
were better than the Philadelphia chromosome negative case.
